The 9 Barrel
Wines Tasted By
CARO MAURER

MASTER OF WINE

She belongs to one of the most exclusive circles in the world: Caro Maurer, journalist from Bonn, has been Master of Wine since September 2011. She is the first woman in the German-speaking world to have achieved the Master of Wine title.

She has tasted all nine Lost Barrels wines. Below she gives wine lovers an exclusive insight into her tasting notes:

Lost Barrel

Pfarrwingert Pinot Noir
50°31‘34.8“N 7°02‘24.8“E Found in Dernau

„This wine is all about red fruit. The red currants and cranberries on the nose seem preserved and jellied. They are accompanied by exotic notes of cardamom, cloves, anise, a hint of cinnamon and notes of dark chocolate. The maturity of the vintage is evident in softer, almost melted tannins. Impressive length.“

Lost Barrel

Pfarrwingert Pinot Noir
50°31‘36.3“N 7°02‘25.7“E Found in Dernau

„Red currants and cherries on the nose. The aroma is almost floating – full of fragrant lightheartedness. In between, sweet hints of mild red paprika and milk chocolate. The ripe, polished tannins are already blending into the velvety texture. The density and concentration are impressive.“

Lost Barrel

Hardtberg Pinot Noir
50°32‘05.7“N 7°02‘47.7“E Found in Dernau

„Morello cherries on the nose: ripe and juicy on the one hand, clear and refined on the other. Spiced by a touch of juniper, freshly ground black pepper and cardamom. An overall cool impression – typical for the Hardtberg vineyard. On the palate the acidity builds up a taut tension, while the tannin is finegrained yet smooth. An elegant and silky wine with a powerful finish.“

Lost Barrel

Daubhaus Pinot Noir
50°32‘05.7“N 7°02‘47.7“E Found in Ahrweiler

„A teenager in its developmental stage. On the nose, you will find a playful interaction between toast, mocha and chocolate with cherries preserved in liqueur, fresh cherry blossoms and a hint of green bell pepper. On the palate, the harmony is far more advanced. Fruit and spice are unified, the tannin is silky, the acidity honed in. A very distinctive wine.“

Lost Barrel

Pfarrwingert Pinot Noir
50°31‘50.7“N 7°04‘41.5“E Found in Dernau

„Plums, cherries, blueberries on the nose with dried mallow flowers, allspice and black pepper. There are also notes of freshly sharpened pencil and dark whole wheat bread. On the palate, this wine is still young, cloistered, tightly spun around an axis of firm acidity and fine-grained tannin. Memorable and penetrating in its intensity whilst maintaining an elegant line throughout.“

Lost Barrel

Sonnenberg Pinot Noir
50°31‘50.7“N 7°04‘41.5“E Found in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

„The loess soils of the Sonnenberg contribute to charming and approachable fruit notes in this wine: Candied morello cherries and strawberries dipped in dark chocolate accompanied by a spice mix of freshly ground pepper, soy sauce, balsamic notes and cold coffee. On the palate, this wine is fine, smooth and distinguished. Satin texture, polished tannins and the taut acidity are beautifully balanced. This wine is made to please.“

Lost Barrel

Kräuterberg Pinot Noir
50°32‘29.5“N 7°06‘15.7“E Found in Walporzheim

„This Kräuterberg wine resists to being broken down into its individual components. Each approach brings a different impression: once you sense blood orange, then cherries or plums, sometimes floral notes of mallow, rose petals or mineral traces from pencil sharpener and graphite. You might even get bold hints of coconut, coffee, dark chocolate or black pepper. This profound complexity has a natural cause: the Kräuterberg is located at the opening of the valley near Walporzheim. It benefits from both the coolness of the Eifel hills and the warmth that the Rhine sends from the east. The tannin is noticeable, but fine grained, the acidity draws a smooth path. A monumental wine in the making!“

Lost Barrel

Trotzenberg Pinot Noir
50°32‘22.7“N 7°06‘20.6“E Found in Marienthal

„A tasting can only ever be a snapshot of the moment – with a careful forecast, because it still takes time for this wine to fully decipher. The Trotzenberg offers many different impressions right now: Pickled red cherries and blood orange, candied rose petals and spicy hints of paprika powder, black pepper, dark chocolate and cocoa beans. In addition, there is a scent of dried mallow flowers. This wine resembles a complex story that has yet to weave its narrative strands into a great novel.“

Lost Barrel

Hardtberg Pinot Noir
50°32‘40.1“N 7°06‘29.8“E Found in Dernau

„Ripe plums wrapped by smoked bacon notes on the nose. There is also a fragrant hint of dried violets as well as mocha and cocoa notes from the new oak. A green, slightly salty note then blends into the flavor, reminiscent of nori leaves or dried seaweed – a reference to the whole grapes used during fermentation. The tannin is grainy, the body is lean and powerful. Everything seems condensed and very compact. A hedonistic wine designed for the long haul.“
